Taproom @ Islington

The full Hipster team went for an outing. To avoid the Sunday scaries, we ventured forth to find a cozy haven. Unfortunately London weather was not cooperating and we stumbled out into a torrential downpour. With our mission of experiencing a fresh atmosphere firmly in mind, while staying slightly dry, we decided to stay somewhat central. This led us into the doors of the Taproom. We were going for a drink, maybe two, which of course turned into a few more and some dinner.
The Taproom on Upper Street is the perfect local pub, small but great selection, comfortable atmosphere, and simple yet tasty food, specifically pizza, just pizza.
The space isn’t large but rather than feeling crowded it feels homey. The basement has a space that is often used for comedy shows or private events.
Our chosen day of Sunday was perfect as there is both a deal on cask beers and their tasty pizza menu.
Cold Brew Kombucha went on a cider tasting spree and sampled their Honey Mushroom pizza. She said the honey really complimented all of the flavours. Hertiage Avacado Toast said it was amazing, but too sweet for a full pie in his opinion. I, Retro Denim Jacket, remarked that it was sexually ‘shroom-y. By which I meant the flavors melded well together, and it had a strong taste of mushrooms.
I grabbed the Margherita pizza, which I exclaimed the dough was bangin’, but it could have used more sauce. However, still up there in quality. While almost all pizza is delicious, there is a quality spectrum. I sampled many of the beers, but settled with Fourpure Oatmeal Stout. Which is unsurprising, as my tastes tend towards darker drafts.
HAT ordered the Sausage pizza, and said the sausage was mild with a fresh taste, but could have been more spiced. The pie presented a strong red onion flavour, the sauce was good, and crust was exceptional. To which I commented that due to the strength of the onion flavour and I hoped that I didn’t have to kiss anyone later. Not exactly a first date dish. CBK eloquently said it has a very fresh, farm to table feel.
HAT had only good things to say about the overall crust: nice to hold, chewy, but not too chewy, definitely the best part of the experience.
HAT had a PSA: don’t try the chilli oil, it’s not garlic oil… you will regret it for the rest of your life, and possibly your first born’s as well
Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be returning again, just maybe not using the chilli oil next time
