In the hipster household, we value sustainability and are acutely aware of the issue of single use plastic packaging. While trying to help combat those evils, I decided to try a shampoo bar for the first time. They are readily available from many companies now. …
Hipster taco night is a time to settle into the kitchen and get our slow cook on. Our absolute favourite recipe is our healthy jackfruit carnitas. We use the term carnitas with a bit of creative license, after all, carnitas translates to “little meat”, and …
Shopping for the perfect gift can be difficult which is why we have put together some suggestions to help you out. While we all love giving gifts, we have also tried to give some holiday gift ideas that are eco-friendly so that you can enjoy giving gifts to your friends and family while not taking away from the environment.
This cookbook is a must have for any chef looking to expand their knowledge and skills. Anything cooked by chef Thuy Diem Pham is delicious, so you can understand how exciting this cookbook is. She covers Vietnamese food culture, shares stories that have shaped her recipes, and tips for cooking Vietnamese classics. For your friend or family who is eager to make their own pho or has a ridiculous love of fresh seafood, this is the cookbook for them.
For the Travel Enthusiast: ToolboxCollapsible Cutlery Set
If you have someone on your list who travels, commutes a lot, or just loves a picnic, collapsible cutlery is brilliant. Not only is it eco friendly but it is perfect for keeping on hand for when cutlery is not available. This kit is a definite godsend. Pair with a lunch box, thermal flask, or just on its own. A handy gift is always appreciated.
For someone who loves to try new teas or is looking to get into tea, pretty much anything from Whittard is a win. Their Feast of Tea covers most of their classics with a good selection of black, green, and white teas ranging from fruity and floral, to rich and spicy. If you would prefer to give a wider variety of beverages, try The World of Whittard Gift Set, which includes some of their coffees and luxury hot chocolates. Yum! We have merch and we have been eager to tell you about it. Making merch has been an avenue that we have toyed with for a while now, but we did not want to just dive in without making sure that it also fit with …
Everyone understands the importance of a unique, bespoke piece. The joys of having one of a kind clothing can be surpassed by little else for the fashion forward. One of the easiest ways to achieve that is through taking the time to upcycle. If you …
You know what they say…when in Rome make sausage rolls! They date all the way back to the Roman empire but fit just as nicely in a modern day tea service. Here in the Hipster House, we prefer to use game meat when we can, which is why I started making these simple and savoury homemade venison sausage rolls.
However, like most game, venison is leaner than farm raised meats which can make the mince versions a tad dry. To compensate, add in some higher fat content meat to supplement. You can make your own puff pastry, or use pre-rolled puff pastry, depending on how dedicated you are.
One last note before we get to the business end, make sure you have a tipple to hand. Cooking should be a relaxing time and I recommend settling in with a tall glass of Erdinger Dunkel for this one. If non-alcoholic is your game, a nice lingonberry & soda pairs well with the finished homemade venison sausage rolls.
Here at the Hipster House, we love to use game meat when we can. There are many great reasons to replace your favourite meat. Game is healthy, sustainable, versatile, and delicious, and this wild venison and butternut squash risotto is an excellent way of showcasing …
Living in a time that lends itself to excess, there has a been a push to cut down on manufactured goods. There are ways to refurbish things around your own home. Tackling this kind of project can sound intimidating, but there is no reason to …
Living in these crazy times being physically sequestered and trying to keep your sanity is not always the clearest of paths. However, if you are stuck here is a list of some things to try.
1) Finish a crafting project you have been putting off
For me that has been sewing. I learned to sew years ago and have been putting off working with a very special fabric, but there is no time like the present.
2) Find new ways of keeping in touch with people
After having moved back to the States for the time being, I had been pushing myself to see all my lovely friends who were still in in the U.S.. However, between trying to coordinate both of our schedules and travel needed it has been difficult and led to many reschedules. Now that we have been staying inside, we have been diligently scheduling digital happy hour to keep in touch. Back in the UK, Cold Brew Kombucha and Heritage Avocado Toast have been taking part in weekly game nights with the London crew via the glories of the internet.
3) Learn a new skill
Try a new skill like baking, hand knitting, or maybe be ambitious enough to learn a new language. For recipes I really like https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/ and Duolingo is a great app for a starting a linguistic adventure. If you are looking to dive into an Asian language, Lingodeer is also a great shout.
4) Try your hand at cooking or baking something you have been wanting to try but may be too elaborate for regular life
