Favourite Gins You Need To Try

Gin is the summer tipple of choice here in the Hipster House. This popular alcohol allows for a versatile range of summer cocktails, including (but not limited to) the refreshing gin and tonic. It also comes in a wide range of flavour options to suit any preference and style. To help you out we have put together our favourite gins that you need to try. With Father’s Day just around the corner, the Hipster at Home team asked their fathers to share their preferred gins as well. Cheers!

Cold Brew Kombucha’s Pick:

Dà Mhìle Seaweed Organic Gin

Straight off you are hit with what can only be described as salt water scent, like a entering a seaside town, making this gin distinct before you have even taken a sip.

During one of our visits to Cardiff, Non-Gender Specific Plaid brought out this gin and said we had to try it. This was coming from someone who is not a big gin drinker herself, but she was insistent that this was a gin we would love, and she was right. Dà Mhìle Seaweed Organic Gin is not your parents’ gin. Straight off you are hit with what can only be described as salt water scent, like a entering a seaside town, making this gin distinct before you have even taken a sip. The taste is mellow and well rounded with a subtle saltiness that holds its own against strong flavours, which makes sense as it was apparently created to be the perfect gin to accompany seafood.

Although this gin makes a great g&t, it is also nice on the rocks or in a gin martini (or as my mother would call it, a real martini). Although, I would highly recommend this gin, you should be ready for it, if you go in expecting a traditional gin you could be put off. But if you love gin with something different and if the smell of the seaside brings you to your happy place, this gin is will become the star of your bar.

I have to give an honourable mention to Jinzu Gin. It was extremely difficult to make a choice between these two favourites. So if a more sake influenced gin sounds like your, well, glass of gin, give it a go.

“I don’t have a favourite gin but comparing Sapphire to Gordon’s side by side, I like the crisp juniper taste of the Sapphire. Gordon’s seemed heavier on the tongue.”

Retro Denim Jacket’s Pick:

Suntory Roku Gin

Between the fruit, flowers, and earthy green tea, it echoes springtime, allowing one to enjoy the season year-round.

The Suntory Roku Gin can be deliciously enjoyed on its own as well as with a mixer. It falls into the more botanical category, which I tend to favour. Encased in the gorgeous packaging are tones of matcha and cherry blossom for the nose, fruity botanicals for taste, and a slight sansho pepper finish. Between the fruit, flowers, and earthy green tea, it echoes springtime, allowing one to enjoy the season year-round. Grab and crack open the cherry blossom decorated bottle that tastes as fantastic as it looks on your shelf.

“I would say the bouquet of Tanqueray goes best with tonic, but I prefer drier gins for martinis. For mixed drinks, try blending gin with a little brandy something magical happens.”

Retro Denim Jacket’s Father – Tanqueray

Heritage Avocado Toast:

Bloom London Dry Gin

This gin will place you squarely in the midst of a summer flower seller, without any of the distracting perfume scent.

Bloom favourite gin

Bloom London Dry Gin is caught at the crossroads between how much you’ll love it in the moment and how you’ll long for it when the experience ends. An exceptionally smooth drink with a mellowed juniper flavour. Instead, this gin will place you squarely in the midst of a summer flower seller, without any of the distracting perfume scent. Best paired with a mild tonic, rocking chair and a good book.
