The first of May is upon us. Although London has a distinct lack of fields, maypoles, and adorable animals (Hipster Cats not included of course) that does not mean there has to be a lack of tradition and celebration. Living in such a vibrant and …
It is no secret that we love pancakes here in the Hipster House. We love them with maple syrup, chocolate chips, berries, bacon, really any way you can serve them. We’ll even take them when they don’t resemble a dessert Dairy Free Chocolate Pancakes. One …
Living in these crazy times being physically sequestered and trying to keep your sanity is not always the clearest of paths. However, if you are stuck here is a list of some things to try.
1) Finish a crafting project you have been putting off
For me that has been sewing. I learned to sew years ago and have been putting off working with a very special fabric, but there is no time like the present.
2) Find new ways of keeping in touch with people
After having moved back to the States for the time being, I had been pushing myself to see all my lovely friends who were still in in the U.S.. However, between trying to coordinate both of our schedules and travel needed it has been difficult and led to many reschedules. Now that we have been staying inside, we have been diligently scheduling digital happy hour to keep in touch. Back in the UK, Cold Brew Kombucha and Heritage Avocado Toast have been taking part in weekly game nights with the London crew via the glories of the internet.
3) Learn a new skill
Try a new skill like baking, hand knitting, or maybe be ambitious enough to learn a new language. For recipes I really like https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/ and Duolingo is a great app for a starting a linguistic adventure. If you are looking to dive into an Asian language, Lingodeer is also a great shout.
4) Try your hand at cooking or baking something you have been wanting to try but may be too elaborate for regular life
This time of crisis gives us the opportunity to make changes to how we shop that can help those within our community as well as improve how we shop in the future. Shop with a Plan: We have been asked to limit our trips outside …
Still looking for the perfect gifts? Or just simply let time get away from you? We have all been there. This time of year can get pretty hectic, so to help you out we have put together some last minute gift ideas based on items …
Thanksgiving is not complete without pecan pie, but why limit yourself to only enjoying it once a year? This pie is a super simple; one bowl, quick to mix up, and perfect to make in advance. The bourbon adds an extra depth to this pie and compliments the nuts while balancing out the sweetness of the sugars. Use it to impress your guests at a dinner party or bring it along to a get together. We can say from experience that this pie always goes over a treat and is anticipated more than anything else in the meal. In fact you may even want to make two as one never seems to be enough.
Root vegetables are in abundance this time of year and what better way to use up some spare carrots than with a delicious, autumnal soup. I find soup makes an excellent go-to for a quick lunch or simple weekday supper. You can make it in …
Last Wednesday, after a bit of a mix up, we headed to the brilliant pop-up Whisk Dessert Bar. Being locals, we had passed the place many times and kept thinking we needed to try it. After all, the idea of a three course dessert seemed …
Originally intending to spend the night dining exclusively on desserts (stay tuned to find out what happens!), we explored more of Chapel Market and stumbled upon the Little Viet Kitchen. We had seen it featured before on food shows and figured we’d give it a go.
The decor, clientele, and wait staff outfits are all decidedly, perfectly, hipster. The whole place oozes the fond memories of the owner’s home country and the comforting role food played there. Her efforts to give the restaurant a homey and welcoming atmosphere are keenly felt, making Vietnam feel a little less far away. Unlike many establishments that attempt to capture this feeling of home away from home, the LVK actually delivers!
Distressed benches, eclectic jars, and strategically placed foliage makes for the perfect hipster decor
The dinner crew of HAT, CBK, and RDJ split a few items and each had a separate main. But before the food, we need to appreciate the carafe of cuke and lemon water on the table. So refreshing. The shared dishes included fried wasabi tofu squares which were divine! I chose to finish my last morsel with it, it was that delicious. Crispy on the outside with a firm and tender tofu centre, which did not have much spice but more a hint of the wasabi. The chicken skewers on a bed of leeks was the second item we split, and was the weakest of all the dishes in my opinion. If anything, the chicken was not as flavorful as the rest of the meal.
For mains, the salmon with tamarind and pepper sauce was quite simply, one of the best salmon dish I have had eating out in London. Super tender and if you haven’t had tamarind before, this is the dish to try it out on. CBK ordered up a crab, papaya, and daikon salad which was all sorts of refreshing mixed with a spicy kick. The peppers were like that drunk at your house party who is fun at the start but Continue reading Little Viet Kitchen
