Decorative D.I.Y. Gifts for Mother’s Day

U.S. Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Circumstances being what they are in the these days, there has never been a better time to dive into the world of decorative D.I.Y. for gift ideas. This year the hipster family welcomed a new nephew and that means a new mother who is excited to celebrate her first Mother’s Day. Her little one is just about able to sleep in his own room, so what better gift than some D.I.Y. artwork to decorate his nursery.

In the true spirit of being stuck at home, along with my love of anything art, I decided to make D.I.Y. wall art with the baby’s grandmother. With stores being closed we looked for art supplies around the house and looked for some inspiration online. Luckily, she was an art teacher we had all the materials we needed. We used 2 small canvases, and 3 different mid-sized canvases. For a medium, we used acrylic paint.

Build a Background

We began by creating a galaxy background. I know we are a little behind the galaxy trend curve, circa 2016, but the theme for the nursery was declared to be outer space. Start with a black base, then add in some cerulean in a halo, followed by purple. Blend these colours into the black with a sponge brush, the basic kind you would find at a craft store. Next I added white to a sea sponge and dabbed it through the centre of the halos to create the full galaxy effect. Paint the sides of all canvases black, that way you will not have to frame them to hang them up.

After the background was done, we took the canvases outside and splattered white paint on them to create stars. As we are all going a little stir crazy, the paint flicking got a little aggressive. I would suggest painting in clothes you do not care about.

Make it Personal

Once the background is dry, we painted space themed objects on top. If you do not feel comfortable free handing the objects and lettering, use some stencils . Then we added lettering of “oh, the places you’ll go” because who doesn’t love a Dr. Seuss quote for the little ones? I have very fond memories of my dad reading the Too Many Daves story to me growing up.

Let everything dry again and hang in one of those patterns that diversifies the arrangement. If you are looking for that over the top touch, lay the pattern out ahead of time and paint the galaxy to swirl from one canvas to the other. It helps to not only make it look cohesive, but also helps you to keep the idea of your plan for where the canvases should fall in relation.

This process is applicable to any idea for nursery or your regular walls. Get creative and do it yurtself.
